As internet connectivity grows worldwide, a new type of journalism is emerging that threatens to rock the fourth estate. Participatory journalism is a form of news production and dissemination that is controlled in some way by the general public. Although participatory journalism has found avenues in the letters page of the newspaper, or talk radio, the emergence of the Internet has enabled ordinary people to tell the news like never before.

Where are the roots of participatory journalism. Explore old and current examples, including Radio 702 (Judge Desai).

Participatory Journalism at a glance

Participatory Journalism or citizen journalism can be defined as: When citizens contribute photos, videos and news updates to mainstream news outlets, many would argue they're doing journalism.

an example of citizen journalism today is the forming of Blogs. A fundemental question arises as to whether blogging is actually journalism. some say it's not because there is no editor between writer and reader. and there is no newsroom. BUT All gatekeeping influences don't exist EG. Advertising. So the kind of journalism being prodeuced is quite pure and raw. "Opinion journalism weblogs" like instapundit.com make a difference in the public policy arena.

Perhaps today, "What good is information if you can't react to it"?

A History-- Talk radio could be seen as the original blog. It would be interesting to see if radio stations today actually have blogs. Perhaps it's not neccessery. However while talk radio allows a one to one conversation with many listeners, a blog allows for mass discussion as well as mass listeners.

The Pros and Cons of Participatory Journalism--

PROS

It's not one to one but many to many or one to one. however you wish to communicate.

Sharing becomes caring. the sharing of knowledge and peoples stories could add texture and context to an otherwise bland and objective report by a journalist by offering more insight.

People on the margins can have their say. This is a particularly fuzzy area in a South African context because it's not entirely true. Only those who have a computer and a phoneline can benefit. But online polls allows readers to have an opinion and for journalists to get a clear idea of what the people think fast and easliy.

Everyone is a gatekeeper. "We can do journalism together. correcttions and discussions will help to improve the quality of journalism.

CONS

You never know who knows about something and who doesn't. you could be getting many stupid voices instead of one educated voice. People speak their thoughts ad not facts and there is nothing to stop them from exaggerating or lying. the fact that everyone is a gatekeeper is also a caon. there are crackpots in the world that could ruin the harmony of working together to form better journalism.
